The Day Our World Forever Changed

September 11th, 2001

I watched in horror as so many did and knew this was a mile stone in my life that would forever change it. That life as I knew it was over for good and that I would always know exactly where I was when I heard the news and saw the pictures. Just as I remember where and what I was doing when JFK was assassinated.

One report said the terrorists believed Americans feared a military coup was occuring in our government and they hoped to advance that cause by plunging us into further chaos, how could they not know us better than that I asked?

I wondered why, if they hated America's foreign policies (some I also disagree with) would they target and kill citizens of 62 nations and every religion? How could that be a goal?

They want us to live in terror and fear, but they do not understand that we have fought long and hard many times to protect our right to freedom.

Then it dawned on me, I was asking these questions because I was arrogant enough to believe it could never happen on our native soil and then I thought about the other countries that live with terrorists every day and wondered why I had never thought of that before.

Today our greatest and most valuable national resource is not here with us, they are our young men and women who VOLUNTEERED to enlist in our military services and were ready to go to defend our freedom. How do we say thank you? I don't know how.

My parents used to tell me to not judge, to always remember that the truth shall set you free. I must apologize to so many different religions that have holy days near our Christmas. I never stopped and thought of their holy days as being as sacred as our own are.

My first New Year's resolution is first and foremost to continue to thank the young brave men and women who guarantee our freedom, and my second one is to not turn a blind eye to what I don't understand, but to embrace it and ask questions.

Please pray to whoever you worship that these next years bring understanding and kindness; lest we lose our greatest national resource and the potential each and every one of these brave men and women have to give the world during their life time.
